Mike Hadreas has played piano since childhood, but first started writing actual songs about 5 years back, during a self imposed detox period. In an effort to get healthy, he spent his time in isolation focusing on a set of songs that would evolve into the first Perfume Genius album, Learning.
His latest effort, Put Your Back N 2 It, builds on the intimacy of the first, but as he discussed with us back in the spring, the album explores issues and themes that are a little more outward looking. “I finally managed to get out of my head…” says Hadreas. “And as I got out in the world more, I realized that my problems aren’t very unique, and that’s a very comforting thing to know.”
This Friday, Mike brings the Perfume Genius band back to DC for a set at The Hamilton. And while he is playing with a band on the tour, much of the power of his music lies with just his voice and the piano. We’ve got a pair of tickets to the show to give away, just let us know in the comments, of any artist and song, which piano accompanied composition moves you the most.
Leave us your email address and we’ll get in touch with the winner by Thursday evening.
