America Hearts

It’s been nearly a year since Jess Matthews emerged with Fond Regards, the debut EP from her solo project, America Hearts. Simple and catchy, the EP introduced us to Jess’ short and sweet style of songwriting, and familiarized us to her stepping out from behind the drum kit — the role she fulfills as a member of both Edie Sedgwick and Gestures.

With Matthews leading on guitar and vocals, her America Hearts band is comprised of familiar D.C. music veterans, including Justin Moyer (Edie Sedgwick, Antelope) currently on bass; Mark Cisneros (Medications, Gestures) on guitar; Mike Tasevoli (Casper Bangs, Mother) on drums; and up until this past summer, featured Olivia Mancini (Washington Social Club) in the lineup before she ultimately moved on to New York.

We recently hung out with the band in their Mount Pleasant recording space, where they played a few songs for us in advance of their upcoming release party for a brand new 7″ on Arlington based-Yeah Gates. The “Be My Jones” record includes “Home,” ”Race Car Driver” and “Lost Now.”

The show is this Sunday, Oct. 31, so for Halloween this year, make plans to head out to the Black Cat dressed as your favorite childhood memory and celebrate with America Hearts during the Yeah Gates Spooktacular. The band will be sharing the stage with The Cheniers and Foul Swoops, who will also have a 7″ available as well.

And in the meantime, check out an exclusive performance of “Be My Jones” below, and audio from our session.
