Cornel West Theory: Embryo Capital

This Saturday, we’re all looking forward to hitting the Black Cat to catch a headlining set by Diamond District, D.C.’s own hip-hop supergroup, comprised of emcees X.O., Y.U., and emcee & producer extraordinaire Oddisee, who recently announced his decision to relocate to New York City to continue his grind.

Additionally, the stage will be set ablaze by socially conscious, activist hip-hop crew The Cornel West Theory. No word on whether or not their namesake will be joining them on stage for this set, but either way their energy will not be diminished.

Last year, the band laced us with their Sockets debut, Second Rome, an aggressive social commentary invoking the likes of Gil Scott-Heron and Public Enemy — so much so that Chuck D has counted CWT among his favorite groups.

In advance of the show, CWT has been kind enough to share a brand new mixtape with us, and you can download it from us right here. The mixtape features nine new tracks, all recorded by Edie Sedgwick, and a couple of tracks of previously unreleased material. There is even a taste of their live show with one live cut recorded at the Black Cat back in January.

Enjoy, and we’ll see you at the show on Saturday!

Diamond District play with The Cornel West Theory, Damu The Fudgemunk and DJ Underdog at the Black Cat on Saturday, July 31st. $12

anyone who disliked this cant take the realism they get from this. it will take a WHILE to understand there album, but when u do, a whole new world opens up, u see them in a whole new light, and the lyrics fit perfect with the instrumentals , took me 4 months to finnally understand them, its something u NEVER heard before, nothin else comes close which is why its hard to understand trust me when u understand them and i mean really understand them, u may or may not like it. but u WILL RESPECT THEM

This is hip hop. F*** all this other ish. The first track is no joke. Great mix. But they still rep the DC area and not the “DMV”. Most of the bands from DC are not even from DC. Most call it DMV to make it seem like they have street cred. Be you!!! We need more artists that tell the truth, especially when u claim a given region of the earth. Alaskans don’t claim Canada. Ok…that was a side note, this is the hardest ish out. Thanks. I played the first track like 100 times. 1 love AON!

  6. “Hustlers Theme” is so dope. Can’t believe the world doesn’t have this group on tour. Its hrd to find music like this nowadays.

  7. Villega

This cd makes me look at the band in a totally different light. Second Rome(their 1st CD) was great but I honestly feel the hard core samples and str8 raw hip hop more. Peace and thanks for constant growth yall. Put DC on a better map then wack ass Wale who aint even raised or went to not one school in DC. OK…let me stop. BUT ITS TRU!!!!!

  13. if i hear ‘captives live at the black cat live,’ i just might lose my mind. but in the meantime, keep the positivity going and the knowledge coming.
