Last week saw the release of Dum Dum Girls’ debut album, I Will Be on Sub Pop. Expanding from a solo project started by lead singer Kristin Gundred (aka Dee Dee) in 2008, this album follows a handful of releases from last year that include a self-released CD-R, a 7″ and a 12″ EP.
The album does feature a slightly cleaner sound from the previous releases, the result of some upgrades in recording gear no doubt. But a mix of 60s girl group harmonies and fuzzy garage pop remains the core of their mission.
A few days before the release of their record, the Girls stopped through DC while on tour with Male Bonding. With impeccable style and matching vintage Silvertone guitars, the band bestowed a heavenly bliss upon the crowd as they cranked through some slight variations on the album tracks and a couple of their earlier cuts.
Check out their performance above of “Catholicked” and “Bhang, Bhang, I’m a Burnout.”
