Last week saw a major bump in DC hip-hop’s national visibility thanks to Wale & UCB playing as the house band for MTV’s VMAs, and the announcement that he’ll be joining Jay-Z in the opening slot on the Blueprint 3 tour. But DC is only warming up.
Tomorrow night at the 9:30 Club, we’ll see some of the DMV’s freshest voices on display for the DMV South Takeover. UGKs Bun B, who seems to be making more frequent appearances in the area, will be hosting a ridiculous showcase featuring Wale, X.O., Tabi Bonney, Phil Ade, Kingpen Slim and more. This is a perfect opportunity to take in a sampling of the diverse styles in DC hip-hop, from some of the District’s most resonant voices.
We recently got a chance to catch up with X.O. after one of the Pure Lounge Open Mic nights he hosts each Monday night. Through a series of online mixtapes, including the recent fire RealMatic and Monumental, and his work with Diamond District (alongside Oddisee and Y.U.) , X.O. has been placing his gritty & witty stamp on DC hip-hop. He knows there are haters out there, but has no time for them. Worrying about them takes focus away from his main goal of going hard, staying true, staying Realmatic.
