With a name like DeLeon, AON’s collective interest was piqued (well — just Raul and Jian, whose last names are both DeLeon). We first heard of them when they came through to play the Kennedy Center several months back, but unfortunately word got to us a little too late.
Thankfully we were able to catch them when they returned this summer to play a show at Rock and Roll Hotel. We hung out with guitarist Dan Saks, bassist Kevin Snider (both formerly of the DC-area and well-versed in the language of go-go), drummer Justin Riddle, keyboardist Amy Crawford, and trumpeteer Andrew Oom as they did a sound check and ate some tender vittles. Between bites, they answered some of our questions on Sephardic music, Judaism, the music video for “La Serena” (listen to the song below), and the origin of their name.
DeLeon kicks off their tour with psych-pop giants Os Mutantes on September 24 in Denver, and will be returning to our area in a few short weeks when they play the State Theatre. Tickets could go fast so get on that soon.
