Chevy Chase isn’t exactly the part of town that first comes to mind when you are thinking of a good place to catch a live show, but Comet Ping Pong in Upper Northwest is quickly establishing itself as a solid live music destination in the District. Known primarily for their wood-burning oven baked pizza (smoked mushrooms and anchovies are a personal favorite) & ping pong tables, but you should make plans to enjoy some beers and a show there soon.
Now, if you don’t drive, it can be a little challenging to get to, but it’s worth the trip. The last few months have seen performances from bands like Calvin Johnson, Mika Miko, Enon, Chain & The Gang, and local favorites like Fffever and the Laughing Man. And they’ve got some more great bands coming up on the schedule.
We’ve teamed up with the folks at Comet to bring you a new series here at AON, allowing us to periodically feature quick sets from some of the bands passing through Comet.
Mark Charles Heidinger and Rose Guerin, better known as Vandaveer, launch AON’s Comet series with a warm and beautiful set of tunes–a teaser of “Ways & Means”, and quick shot “Out Past The Moat”. Guerin’s beautiful tone provides the perfect harmony to Heidinger’s tenor. You’ll certainly hear comparisons to Nick Drake and Dylan which are accurate, but he’s bringing something wholly his own to the table. You might also recognize Heidinger as the bassist for AON favorites, These United States,
Vandaveer is playing the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center this Thursday, Sept 24.
